I enjoyed reading this article. The author and I share some experiences with body awareness. It is such a liberating feeling that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. A shift is beginning to happen on this world. Our life search for inner peace and increased awareness is growing. Soon another enlightened period with increased body awareness, spirituality (mind you, I did not say religion), compassion will spread upon this Earth.
In this article reprinted by Yoga International and written by Swami Rama, one gains a better understanding of what true enlightenment is. It leads one to the understanding of what most great philosophers throughout history have been saying to the general public. Such greats as Martin Luther King, Ghandi, H.H Dalai Lama, etc. have all mentioned that we are one. Jesus himself stated we are one with the Creator and each other. We are all supposed to each other in such way. Division is humanity’s greatest loss. We are to love one other as one race: THE HUMAN RACE. Once the Brahma view is adapted by all, self discipline will rule the land.
With all that said, nudity will not be such a social taboo. With self discipline and enlightenment, sex will be placed in its right format. Sex will be recognized as the beautiful gift and tool to express a deeper feeling of unity and pleasure solely among consenting Adults with the full understanding of the consequences and responsibility sex brings. Nudity will no longer signify sex nor will it be limited to such ideas. Nudity, nude, nakedness will all signify purity, innocence in its natural form. As I like to tell my yoga students, we were born nude into this world thus THAT is our natural state. So once we all achieve pure enlightenment, we will accept nakedness as well as it should be recognized: the Pure Form.
I think this book would be a treasure in my collection. Children are exposed to violence, cursing and negativity at an early age. Today’s tv shows and music videos also exposed the children to sexuality and skimpy clothing. Have you heard the songs on the radio lately? The lyrics are sexual. So why is this book so taboo? I think this is a brilliant way, a wonderful step to show children and society that nudity is a natural state. That is how God wanna us to be anyway.
I have heard many excuses about why people won’t try Nude Yoga. Religion, low sense of self-worth, body image issues, fear of something new but shy was a new excuse I heard this past weekend. The excuse regarding religion I have discussed before here on my blog (refer back to the article, Being Nude …A Natural state of being). Low sense of self-worth is workable. One needs to accept the fact that one is loved unconditionally. We are love. Love is universal. Love is endless. In order to receive love, we must love ourselves. Since we are one with the Universe, Love is within us all. Dr. Wayne Dyer, Gabrielle Bernstein, Erkhart Tolle and other individuals who have written books on self improvement and encouragement have mentioned that all the tools are within us to increase our self-worth. It is up to us to access those tools.
As for Body image issues: this one is dictated by what society deems as beautiful. We are fed so much baloney regarding what a woman or a man should look like. Take the magazines, tv shows, etc. As a yoga instructor and fitness professional, I am told how I am supposed to look to be deemed successful. Well, find encouragement. Photoshop has provided wonders to models and other celebrities. Don’t believe me? Many celebrities have admitted to having cellulite and society still deems them beautiful. Read Kim Kardashian’s admission to her cellulite and her bodily curves or if you are a visual person here are some photos of some celebrities we know and love or this one. Body appreciation should NOT be dictated by magazines or what is seen on TV. WE should be able to define beauty as individuals instead of mindless followers to society’s false reality of beauty. Anyway away from RANTING. As I mentioned before, I have found Nude Yoga to be liberating. It has allowed me to move past my past and my body image issues. But then again that is with daily practice and meditation. Hopefully these links will encourage you to go to the mirror and give yourselves a BIG HUG.
Fear of something new. Who isn’t afraid of the unknown? Think of it this way. Fear was meant to allow us to be vigilant regarding things that are dangerous, a mechanism for survival, very primal in nature. Yet, we allow it to control our daily lives and limit ourselves. We should work through fear in a positive way. Mama Gena states that “Take the appearance of fear as a very positive sign. Fear does not visit when you are conforming and safely following the rules.” Napoleon Hill states: “Fears are nothing more than a state of mind.” Again, a very doable excuse to work with again.
But this weekend, I heard something that almost made me topple over in laughter and disbelief. “I am Shy” Now, now, before you tell me I am being insensitive. Let me tell you the story. I met a gentleman who just started taking yoga and enjoys the stress reduction he gained from it. Now this gentleman is an admitted swinger and is very active in the swinger lifestyle. He frequents swinger parties all the time. He has no problem being nude and having sex in front of others in small or large groups. After revealing such details about his life, I felt that he may be interested in doing yoga in the Nude and so I offered him and his wife private Yoga instruction to assist them in the flexibility, improve their sex lives, etc. It was at this point that he told me that he is too shy to do that. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. A wire in my mind popped at that moment.
What?! Really? I couldn’t believe. Before I laughed out loud at this remark, I asked him, was it because there was no guarantee of sexual relations in Nude Yoga or just the fact it was nude? He proceeded to tell me that it was because he doesn’t feel he would be mature enough to remove sex from the nudity element and may not be focused on his postures. NOW that was a more honest response than the I am shy response.
Thinking about it now, I have to chuckle. Really? You can have sex with different people in front of different people, naked, or with clothes on, of different body sizes but you cant be nude without the sexual element. You do yoga to find yourself and relieve stress. But the two can not be combined? Why is it that being nude has to lead to sex? Have we been programmed that badly to think of sex the instant we see a naked body? Really? I cant believe that. I refuse to believe such nonsense. When I gave birth to my children in their birthday suits, sex was the farthest from my mind. When does seeing a naked body lead to sex? However, I digress. I spoke about nudity and its purity before.
This blog was really to allow me to laugh and try to understand the shy comment from the individual that said. Maybe I can get an explanation for it from one of you who will read it. Maybe not. Maybe I am not to understand. Maybe it is not something to laugh about but to teach me something. Whatever the reason it was said, I will treat it as a holy encounter for growth. But seriously, shy being nude and you are a swinger? Please don’t make me laugh!
Nude Yoga and two beautiful bodies outside in nature. See the harmony in this picture? See the love? I find this to be a beautiful image of acceptance, harmony, pure surrender to the environment and connectivity to the Universe as one entity. Come and join me in Nude Yoga. Let us be harmonious with our environment and Universe.
My significant other found this link and I was compelled to place it on the blog. We need to contribute if not pass the word around about this project. It is not just for women but it is for the cause of nudity as well. Nudity is a taboo that needs to be enlightened and educated to the masses. It is not on the same level of pornography and thus should not have to share the same platform. Nudity is a state of being. Pornography and or fetish is an activity that promotes sexual feelings/ sexual relations, or sexual healing. They are not the same thing and thus should not be treated as such. Please support the cause. FREE THE NIPPLE.
Brave women. When I say the preview, it reminded me of a time when we, women, had to fight for our right to vote. Nudity is NOT perversion. It is a state of being without boundaries. Being free. Clothes are to protect us from the elements NOT from each other. We are to love each other for our essence/auras.
When I read this article I was interested in learning what the big deal is. It is a shame that we have miseducated ourselves to say that exposing breasts in a newspaper for advertisement is pornography and exploitation of women. I do not understand if these women who volunteered to be photographed with their breasts exposed to have readers of both sexes to see them how can it then be sexists? Nudity is not dirty. Where is that is said that it is forbidden? I have the Bible and it states I am not to get unclothed in front of my brother, uncle, etc. If you read that section of the Bible closely, it is in the context of sex. Sleeping with the individual. So in other words, INCEST is forbidden not the act of being nude. If being nude was a sin then Job who felt hurt and wanted an answer from God regarding his sufferings after God allowed the devil to plague him with boils and lost of children God would have punished him further once he stripped his clothes off, placed dust on his head and sat with his friends who did the same to consul him. Don’t believe me read it for yourself. Read the Book of Job, Chapters 1 and 2. God wanted a relationship with HIM not religion. Before we throw the book at others for their actions, we should prepare ourselves and improve. Nudity is not a SIN. We are not born with clothes and here is an awakening: you may be buried with clothing but you do not take them with you so YOU ARE NAKED when you meet your maker. There is NOTHING to hide. Think of that!

Has anyone here ever tried Nude Yoga? Do you enjoy it more than with clothes on or do you think it is unnatural to workout without clothing? Are you fearful that it may place you in a cumbersome position that will embarrass you? Whatever the reason… I have found that doing yoga in the nude has been a more liberating experience for me.
I was once very shy about showing off my body. I was raised to think of nudity as a shameful thing and only sacred with your lifetime partner. Sex was not to happen until marriage and your LIFETIME with such a commitment was the only one to be allowed to see you in a such a manner. But throughout the years, I wondered, “Could that be entirely true?” Could nudity be evil? If so, why are we born naked? Why does it look innocent for an infant to be in the nude but dirty and shameful for a child or an adult to be nude? What is the the cutoff age? Why are other cultures who are nude seen as savages or naive people? Where did we get this idea from? The Bible? Where in the Bible does it actually say that being nude is evil? I have NOT seen it or read it.
I have been given examples of bible stories such as the one of Adam and Eve. That when they discovered they were naked, they clothed themselves to hide their shame from God. But, excuse me, when they did discover that being naked was BAD. WHEN they ATE the fruit that was forbidden for them ANYWAY. Otherwise, Adam and Eve will still be naked until this day if that so called apple was eaten and the serpent did not deceive them. So, hmmm, it started with a lie that we were told that being naked is wrong and society has decided to keep believing that way. So who are we nudists: perverts or enlightened?
I believe we are the misunderstood, enlightened ones. We have chosen to accept the natural order of things and not be ashamed. We see each other and ourselves as created creatures designed to look definitely in colors, shapes and sizes. We were all created to resemble Our Creator in all ways. Thus, it must be a blessing to realize that being nude is beautiful and not something to look upon with disgust or shame. Society has placed such rules on us. Why? Because of its own perverse thinking. We are to conform to it because of other’s poor, diseased mentality that nakedness is only about being sexual and thus causes perverts and sexual deviants to hunt us innocents as their prey.
What is yoga? Yoga is not just a series of movement that helps you to become more flexible. No! Yoga is the process of one awakening his/her inner warrior and aligning him/herself to the Universe and the Creator as one. To become more enlightened in the ways of the Universe and to the link with the Creator, the Highest Being of all. It is to allow us to connect again instead of walking on this Earth as sole individuals that need to follow rules and can have no sense of enlightenment unless it comes from a bottle or someone telling us to do so. Why has there been so many individuals that have gone into enlightenment through prayer, meditation, exercise, proper eating, fasting, etc.? Look at Ghandi, for example, he practiced yoga, meditation, fasted, etc. This one man become a symbol for his people through simple peaceful protests. Although he has passed, his presence is still much alive today. If you read the philosophy of Yoga, it will tell about this connection.
I believe that when we mix Yoga and nudity together we are allowing ourselves to welcome and enjoy the natural order of things. We are returning back to our original state using our clothes as symbols to remove the “masks” society places on us to conform. Yoga is the process for alignment and nudity is the method to enlightenment.
Thus, I will continue to return to Nude Yoga and continue my journey for more enlightenment and alignment with the Universe.
